Playtech was founded in 1999 in Tartu, Estonia by Teddy Sagi together with partners from the casino, software engineering and multimedia industries.
They are based in Douglas, Isle of Man and currently has over 5 000 employees across 14 countries. The majority of employees work in the research and development of current and future games technologies.

In May 2016 Playtech acquired the Swedish online game developer Quickspin and in July 2016 acquired rival operator Best Gaming Technology (BGT).
In January 2017 Playtech branched out into Romania and announced a new partnership with
Warner Bros for the development of slots based on DC Comic feature films.
